Transportation between the airport and the port of Vienna

Vienna Airport is located about twenty kilometres from the city centre.

The city airport train (CAT) is the fastest way to get between the airport and the city centre (Wien Mitte). The journey takes about 16 minutes and departures are every 30 minutes.

If you opt for a taxi, there is a fixed price between the city centre and the airport (maximum 4 passengers). You must specify that you are going to the airport when booking the taxi in order to avoid additional charges.

The Railjet train also connects the airport with Vienna’s main station or Vienna’s Meidling station. The S7 city train makes stops in Wien Mitte and Praterstern and allows transfers to the metro lines. If you have the Vienna City Card, you can benefit from discounts.

Anker Clock

This art nouveau style clock was built between 1911 and 1914. Every hour, you can see historical figures parade to the sound of the music of the time.

Burgtheater

The Burgtheater, founded in 1741, is one of the oldest and most prestigious theaters in Europe, often considered the Austrian national theater. Located on the Ringstrasse and renowned for its high-quality productions, it has hosted great playwrights, including Goethe and Schiller, and remains a leading cultural centre, with lavish architecture and frescoes by Klimt adorning its walls.

Rathaus (City Hall)

The Rathaus is the city’s neo-Gothic town hall, built between 1872 and 1883 by the architect Friedrich von Schmidt. Located on the Ringstrasse, it is a symbol of the city with its 98-metre central tower topped by the statue of the Rathausmann. This majestic building houses the offices of the mayor and city council, and it is surrounded by Rathausplatz, where various cultural events are held, including the famous Christmas market and open-air film screenings in the summer.

Otto Wagner’s Stadtbahn pavilions, located in Vienna, are iconic buildings of Art Nouveau architecture, designed for the stations of the Stadtbahn urban railway line, opened in 1898. Two of the most famous pavilions, located on Karlsplatz, are characterized by their facades adorned with floral motifs, elegant metal structures and white marble and gold details, symbolizing Viennese modernism. Now restored, these pavilions bear witness to the genius of Otto Wagner and his influence on Viennese urban architecture.

Parliament

The Vienna Parliament, built between 1874 and 1883, is an imposing neo-classical building, inspired by ancient Greek architecture to symbolize democratic ideals. Designed by architect Theophil Hansen, it is adorned with statues of philosophers and the fountain of Pallas Athena, goddess of wisdom, proudly enthroned in front of the main entrance.

St. Stephen’s Cathedral (Stephansdom), located in the heart of the historic center, was built between the twelfth and fifteenth centuries. It is a masterpiece of Gothic architecture, with its imposing 136-meter spire and colorful tiled roof that overlooks the city. St. Peter’s Church (Peterskirche) is an excellent example of Baroque religious architecture. Built in the 18th century, it is famous for its rococo façade and lavishly decorated interior, with frescoes painted by Johann Michael Rottmayr. The church also hosts classical music concerts.

The Vienna Hofburg is a vast imperial complex that was the main residence of the Habsburgs for more than six centuries, testifying to the power of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Composed of multiple wings, chapels and museums, it now houses the official residence of the Austrian president, the Austrian National Library and the Sisi Museum. In front of the Hofburg, Heldenplatz (Heroes’ Square) is an imposing square where the equestrian statues of Austrian heroes, Archduke Charles and Prince Eugene of Savoy, stand.

The Baroque-style Schönbrunn Palace is the former summer residence of the Habsburg imperial family. Built in the seventeenth century, it is distinguished by its vast French gardens, fountains, and magnificent interior rooms, including the famous Hall of Mirrors. The UNESCO-listed palace is home to museums, imperial apartments, and the Porcelain Museum, and it’s also a popular site for visitors due to its zoological garden, the oldest in the world. Its neo-Renaissance architecture and beautifully ornate rooms add to the visit.

MuseumsQuartier

Vienna’s MuseumsQuartier, or MQ, is a vast cultural complex located in the city center, combining museums, galleries, exhibition spaces, and modern art installations. Inaugurated in 2001, it occupies historic buildings of the former imperial stables, skilfully renovated and complemented by modern constructions.
