St. Thomas and the port of Charlotte Amalie are very popular with cruise lines and often found as ports of call in the East and South Caribbean itineraries and in the trips to the Panama Canal that depart from Florida.
This port in the U.S. Virgin Islands is tax-free, so shopping is a very important activity in Charlotte Amalie. If you leave the city, you can find several beaches.

The ships dock at one of the two main piers. Havensight pier is located east of Charlotte Amalie. The other is located at Crown Bay on the west side. Both docks are located a 10-minute taxi ride from the city. It will take you about 30 to 40 minutes to walk.
On busy days, some ships can anchor offshore and tender boats will take you directly to the centre of Charlotte Amalie.
There are few shops near the Crown Bay Pier. You’ll have to head to the charlotte Amalie center.
Havensight pier has several shops and is located near the Yacht Haven Grande Marina, where there are several luxury boutiques.
It should be noted that the driving is on the left side of the road in this island.
If you want to go to a less touristy place, renting a car (Avis, Budget, Discount, Hertz) will be more convenient. Stay careful, because the crime rate is high on this island.
Duty-free shops are mostly located on Veterans Drive Street. (Compare prices, as prices are sometimes equivalent to what you’ll find here).
You can climb the 99 steps (there are 103) in the historic centre for an interesting view of the bay and to see pretty typical houses of the area.
Historic monument dating back to the 17th century. It is possible to climb into the tower. Located on the shore near Vendor’s Plaza.
Skyride gondolas take you all the way to Paradise Point for stunning views of the bay.
There is an observation tower and you can swim in a swimming pool (there are changing rooms). A walking tour of Charlotte Amalie’s historic houses also starts there and goes down to the sea. You will visit Notman House, Haagensen House and the 1829 Hotel.
Coral World Ocean Park is located in Coki Beach and features shows featuring marine animals, fishes, turtles, sharks and rays.
Phantasea Tropical Botanical Garden contains more than 1,000 orchids and several other tropical plants that you can admire along the trails.
