The port of Ilulissat, located on the west coast of Greenland, is one of the country’s most iconic destinations. Nicknamed the “Iceberg Capital of the World,” Ilulissat sits near the mouth of the Ilulissat Icefjord, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This remarkable fjord is fed by the Sermeq Kujalleq Glacier, one of the most productive glaciers in the world, generating impressive icebergs that drift through Disko Bay before continuing into the Baffin Sea and, in some cases, as far as the coasts of Labrador and Newfoundland.
The city itself is a vibrant blend of traditional Inuit culture and modern Arctic life. Visitors can explore the Ilulissat Museum, housed in the former home of polar explorer Knud Rasmussen, to learn about the history of the region and Arctic exploration.
Outdoor activities abound in Ilulissat, with opportunities for hiking along trails with stunning views of the Icefjord, boat trips among gigantic icebergs, and whale-watching expeditions in Disko Bay.
