Most cruise lines welcome babies on board their ships. However, it is important to note that policies may vary from company to company, and it is necessary to check the specific rules of the cruise line you plan to travel with.

The majority of cruise lines require children to be at least 6 months old to accept them on cruises in North America, the Caribbean, Mexico and Europe. For itineraries to certain other destinations, including several consecutive days at sea, the minimum age may be higher (1 year). Cruise lines usually consider the stopover at their private island to be the equivalent of a day at sea, as there is no hospital service on these islands.

Equipment and Services Offered on Board

Some cruise lines offer baby amenities such as cribs, high chairs, and sometimes even daycare services. Find out in advance what services are available and if it is necessary to book them at the time of purchasing your cruise.

Meals for Babies on Board the Cruises

Make sure you know the company’s policy regarding meals for babies. Some companies may offer special menus for toddlers (puree, milk). If not, you’ll need to bring everything needed to feed your baby. If you need to refrigerate breast milk, make sure the cabin has a mini fridge with enough space to do so.

Rate for Infants on Cruises

While some companies offer discounts for young children or 3rd and 4th guests of a cabin, others will require the full adult fare, even for infants. This is justified when you consider the extra work for the crew (installation of the crib, maintenance, diaper management…) and the loss of revenues, because the baby will not spend money on board (drink, excursions, casinos).

Other Things to Consider

Make sure you have all the appropriate documents for your baby, such as their passport and any other documents required by the cruise line.

Most cabins are only equipped with showers, so it won’t be possible to bathe your child unless you have chosen a cabin with a bath.

It should also be considered that the medical equipment of ships is designed for adults and may be less well suited to medical emergencies for babies.

Babies in diapers can’t use pools or most water games.

There is a minimum age for excursions and infants will not be allowed.
