To celebrate its 130 years of exploration, HX Expeditions (formerly Hurtigruten Expeditions) invites its passengers to experience something as unique as it is historic: spending a night in a cabin recreating the atmosphere of an 1896 expedition ship, the year the company launched the world’s very first expedition cruise.
Available exclusively aboard the MS Fridtjof Nansen throughout 2026, the 1896 Cabin is a meticulous recreation of the world of the polar pioneers—those who, like Otto Sverdrup, mapped the far reaches of the Arctic and gave birth to the very spirit of modern expedition travel.
A Journey Through Time, Between Nostalgia and Authenticity
The 1896 Cabin immerses travellers in a period atmosphere: patinated wood panelling, oil lamps, handcrafted furniture, and subtle scents of wood and leather evoking the cabins of yesteryear.
Every detail has been carefully considered based on historical research into ships from the late 19th century—without sacrificing modern comfort.
An Exclusive Experience
The experience is offered as an option for €450 per night (single or double occupancy), for one night only per passenger per cruise.
And beyond the retro charm, the project has a concrete objective: 50% of the profits will be donated to the HX Foundation, to support environmental and scientific initiatives undertaken by the company.
Starting January 29, 2026, the 1896 Cabin will be available on all MS Fridtjof Nansen itineraries throughout the anniversary year.
